Elon Musk ‘sleeps on a couch’ in abandoned library despite £151 billion fortune

Elon Musk may be the second-richest person in the world, but it seems like he still doesn't want to fork out for a proper bed.

The Twitter and SpaceX CEO has admitted in a BBC interview that he 'sometimes' sleeps at Twitter HQ on a couch 'in a library that nobody goes to' on the seventh floor.

This is despite the social media company reportedly converting offices into bedrooms for staff when Musk first took over.

Musk didn't explain why he sleeps on a couch rather than in one of the HQ's plush beds, but it falls in line with his desire to make Twitter staff 'work long hours at high intensity'.

Musk said that: "I kind of like this office building actually" and explained he had tried to turn Twitter HQ into a homeless shelter where rough sleepers could 'bring their tent or whatever' but the building management 'turned it down'.

Musk also shared his emotional struggles running Twitter. He said: "I've been under constant attack. It's not like I have a stone cold heart or something like that. If you're under constant criticism and attack and that then gets fed to you non-stop, including through Twitter, it's rough."

He added: "The pain level of Twitter has been extremely high. This hasn't been some sort of party. It's been really quite a stressful situation in the last several months, not an easy one."

Musk took over Twitter just over one year ago in a massive $44bn buyout deal. In that time he has fired thousands of staff, radically altered the way the platform handles misinformation and hate speech, and drawn controversy for a number of stunts including making his dog the CEO and attempting to remove the 'w' from the Twitter sign outside the building.

What he'll do with the company over the next year, though, is anyone's guess.
