£6.8bn ‘turtle yacht’ would be largest boat ever with space for 60,000 guests

Governments around the world are developing strategies to adapt their towns and cities to rising sea levels and climate change.

But one Italian design studio has gone a step further—by designing a floating city that looks just like a turtle.

The Pangeos 'terayacht' would be the largest floating vessel ever constructed and have enough space for 60,000 guests, as well as a range of hotels, shops, parks, and even an aircraft.

According to its designers, the Pangeos would sail the seas permanently, without ever docking on land—or emitting any carbon pollution.

The huge structure will take around eight years to construct and would require a gigantic shipyard to accommodate it. The studio behind the concept, Lazzarini, hopes to raise funds for the boat by selling NFTs in a crowdfunder.

Lazzarini said: "Pushed from a jet drive transmission, the tera-structure will be able to cruise at a speed of five knots. While sailing, the large wings will gain energy from the breaking of the waves and Pangeos will cruise perpetually without emissions around the planet Earth seas.

They added: "Further, the rooftop area is lined with solar panels, which provide part of the necessary clean energy to power the terayacht."

Those who are interested in backing the crowdfunder will have the opportunity to buy 'virtual spaces' on the terayacht, which could also serve as a property deposit should the boat ever get made. Accommodation options include houses and flats to 'super villas' and even palaces.

Lazzarini said that the design is inspired by Pangea, 'the supercontinent that existed millions of years ago', adding: "If realised, the turtle-shaped vessel will become the world's largest floating structure ever built."
