The Apple logo on the rear of the iPhone looks pretty sci-fi, but there's a lot more to it than that.

It turns out that, for years, this logo has functioned as a secret button with which iPhone users can activate almost any feature they choose.

The button is known as 'Back Tap' and can be activated by tapping the logo two or three times with a finger.

By going into your settings, you can choose what the button does and use it for a variety of shortcuts to do almost anything on the iPhone.

This includes changing the volume, activating Siri, locking the phone, or even control and launch apps.

To activate the feature, open the Settings app, then tap Accessibility > Touch > Back Tap.

Choose whether you want the button to work with a double-tap or a triple-tap and then select a shortcut.

Now all you have to do is tap the button and your chosen shortcut will be activated, saving you countless precious seconds in your undoubtedly very busy day.

Apple is heavily tipped to be on the brink of launching the iPhone 14 in the next month, and it's likely that the new models will retain the Back Tap function.

It's not clear when the iPhone 14 will be launched exactly, but some industry insiders have suggested Apple could host a 'special event' on September 7 and release the new phone range on September 16.

Mark Gurman of Bloomberg said: "The company intends to stream the event online—rather than holding an in-person gathering—continuing an approach it adopted at the start of the pandemic. Apple launches are highly polished affairs, and employees have already begun recording the presentation's segments over the past few weeks."
