Food delivery robot barges through police shooting crime scene to deliver snacks

An AI-powered food delivery robot paid no attention to a police cordon this week as it barreled through the scene of a suspected school shooting.

In a video clip from 'Film The Police LA', the self-driving robot, which is owned by US company Serve Robotics, can be seen trundling its way towards a yellow 'do not cross' caution tape outside Hollywood High School.

After driving right under the tape, it then rolls past a large group of Los Angeles police officers who simply watch it go by.

The suspected shooting fortunately turned out to be a hoax, with no students harmed.

But the ability of a robot to simply roll on through the scene of a suspected crime has raised some eyebrows.

William Gude, who shot the footage, told Gizmodo: "I just saw it coming and I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I thought to myself, 'what did I just capture?'."

He added that the robot 'kept trying' to get around the tape until someone let it through.

The robot is used by Serve Robotics to provide autonomous food delivery to customers.

It is even sometimes used by Uber Eats to deliver meals, although on this occasion, it wasn't serving an Uber Eats order.

In a statement, a spokesperson for Serve Robotics said: "Serve's standard operating procedure is to reroute and not cross barrier tapes; however in this instance the robot supervisor believed they were being waved through. We're taking steps to ensure our operating procedures are followed in future.

"While Serve robots are capable of operating autonomously in most circumstances, they are assigned to human supervisors to ensure their safe operation. This incident was the result of human error in navigating a blockage."
