Google ditches feature honouring Queen Elizabeth and hasn’t given one to Charles

One of the top Google Maps 'Easter eggs' has vanished from the service following the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Google Street View lets users explore streets from a 360-degree view by dropping a small yellow character called 'Pegman' onto the map.

If used near Buckingham Palace, Windsor Castle or Balmoral however, Pegman transformed into 'PegMa'am', gaining a dress and a crown to resemble the Queen—until recently.

Following the death of the late monarch, the feature has quietly disappeared from Google Maps altogether, and hasn't been replaced with an equivalent icon for King Charles.

The feature was first introduced in 2015 to celebrate the Queen becoming the UK's longest-reigning sovereign. It was one of few special Pegman icons, alongside Doctor Who's Tardis in London, the Loch Ness monster (in Scotland) and a UFO over Area-51.

When PegMa'am was first introduced, Reddit users were happy and surprised to see the feature, with one saying: "It's these small details that make me happy."

It's unclear whether there are any plans to replace Queen Elizabeth with a Pegman inspired by the new King Charles III.

Google has been approached for comment about the removal of the Queen's Pegman and this article will be updated when a statement is received.

The UK's official period of mourning Queen Elizabeth ended last week following the late monarch's state funeral.

This was attended by heads of state from all over the world and broadcast on all channels at once in the UK, except for Channel Five, which screened The Emoji Movie.

The Queen's funeral broadcast attracted over 26.2 million viewers. The funeral of Princess Diana in 1997 was watched by around 32 million.
