‘I earn £50k-a-year playing FIFA on PS5 in my bedroom and so can you’

When Alex Shaw first started playing FIFA on his Playstation 2, aged 13, he never thought he'd end up doing it for a living.

But today he's one of 40 people in the UK that plays the virtual football simulator professionally—and has raked in over £150,000 in the last five years doing so.

Alex took part in his first FIFA tournament in 2018 and became an official FIFA eSports player that year. Since then he's travelled around the world competing against the best players in the world as Leicester City, Fulham, and Watford.

Alex, of Quarndon, Derbyshire, said: "I think if my 13 or 14-year-old self could see what I do now and what I had achieved they would be amazed."

Alex plays FIFA up to eight hours a day on his £5,000 monitor and Playstation 5 setup and has raked in thousands of pounds in prize money in online tournaments, the ePremiere League, and the FIFA Ultimate Team (FUT) Champions Cup.

Alex said: "It is definitely something I know I will look back on when I'm older and be proud of and young lads are definitely jealous of what I do for a living.

"When I first bought FIFA and played with my friends, I wasn't very good at all, but over the years and hours of practice I started to get better and began to beat professional players."

Alex, who still lives with his mum Sarah, 57, says his parents have supported his career. "My parents have always been very supportive of my career even when I wasn't earning anything."

Alex's advice to other FIFA players looking to make it big is to take regular breaks. "I love my job but if you are playing for eight hours straight, you need to take a break.

"Even if it's just five or 10 minutes away from the screen it helps. If you don't, you start to become a robot and your gaming rhythms while playing aren't as good."
