Anyone trying to edit their date of birth from under-18 to over-18 must prove their age. They can now upload their ID or record a video selfie that will be analysed by age estimation technology.

Tara Hopkins, public policy director, said: “We want everyone to experience Instagram in a way that’s appropriate for their age.”

However, Richard Collard, of the NSPCC, said: “These measures will seemingly do little to stop new young users creating adult accounts.”
