EastEnders cancelled as BBC soap replaced in schedule shake-up days before Christmas murder revealed

Tuesday night's usual showing of EastEnders has been cancelled as BBC One's schedule was altered to make room for the Sports Personality of the Year awards.

Disappointed fans of the soap may be happier to learn that there will be an extra episode on Friday to make up for the missing instalment.

It comes as the soap is just one week away from the dramatic climax of its Christmas story, which will see one of Walford's male residents killed off.

However, viewers will have to wait an extra day to continue theorising just what will occur at Christmas, as the soap's usual 7.30pm time slot will be taken up by the annual Sports Personality of the Year awards.

The annual TV event sees one sportsperson crowned as Sports Personality of the Year following a public vote.

This year's nominees are cricketer Stuart Broad, jockey Frankie Dettori, footballer Mary Earps, wheelchair tennis player Alfie Hewett, athlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson and golfer Rory McIlroy.

The ceremony will air from 7pm until 9pm, and will be hosted by Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding.

The change in scheduling comes as EastEnders fans continue to share their predictions on the Christmas dead body, with viewers recently suggesting that Nish Panesar (Navin Chowdhry) could be killed by either Stacey Slater (Lacey Turner), or Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal).

The theory comes after Suki and Stacey discovered Nish's involvement with Eve Unwin's (Heather Peace) recent disappearance.

While others have guessed that Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) could be killed by wife Denise Fox (Diane Parish) following his affair with Stacey.

Arguing for this theory, fans have pointed out that Jack's daughter Penny (Kitty Castledine) and niece Lauren (Jacqueline Jossa) will be returning to the show in 2024, with some speculating that they could be attending Jack's funeral.

A number of other characters could also be at risk of dying at Christmas with Keanu Taylor, Dean Wicks, Rocky Cotton, and Ravi Gulati also serving as potential victims.

BBC bosses are keeping a tight-lid on the identity of both the victim and the killer, and the reason for Penny and Lauren's return to Albert Square.

Promo photos show that the pair have reunited in Paris while at a party. However, it seems that something occurs during the French get-together that leads to them having to go back to Walford.

The spoiler line reads: "In Paris, Lauren and Penny make a decision that they have to return to Walford due to the events of the evening."
