Kanye and Trump allowed back on Twitter as Musk reinstates controversial users

Elon Musk continued to shake up Twitter over the weekend, after reinstating banned and suspended users including former President Donald Trump and Ye (aka Kanye West).

Ye, who changed his name last year, was suspended from Twitter in October for a string of antisemitic tweets.

Now he's back on the platform thanks to Elon Musk, who has also reinstated the accounts of other users banned for hateful conduct under Twitter's former policies.

That includes Donald Trump, who was banned after inciting an insurrection at the US Senate in 2021 which resulted in 9 deaths.

Ye has already taken advantage of his newfound Twitter freedom, tweeting on Sunday: "Shalom :)" and "Testing Testing Seeing if my Twitter is unblocked".

Ye was suspended from Twitter in October after saying he would be "going death con 3 On JEWISH PEOPLE" and adding: "you guys have toyed with me and tried to black ball anyone whoever opposes your agenda."

At the time, a Twitter spokesperson said: "The account was locked for violating Twitter's policies".

The suspension is what led Kanye West to agree to buy a right-wing Twitter alternative Parler, which is known for hosting conspiracy theorists and accounts banned elsewhere for hate speech.

Meanwhile, Donald Trump is set to have his account reinstated after Musk shared a poll asking users to vote 'yes' or 'no' on having the former president return to the platform. 'Yes' won the poll, with 51.8% of voters backing Trump's return. It's not clear whether Trump will accept.

The lifting of bans on users appears to be in line with Elon Musk's plans to make Twitter a 'platform for free speech'.

That, or he hopes that bringing controversy back to the platform will help increase its traffic—and ad revenue.
