Mark Zuckerberg has given Meta employees a stark warning that they need to up their game or start updating their CVs, as he says the company faces some seriously tough times.

In a roundtable chat with employees late last week, the founder of Facebook reportedly told his staff that "there are probably a bunch of people at the company who shouldn't be here" and that he's "okay" with employees quitting.

Meta is said to have reduced hiring targets from 10,000 new engineers to just 6000 or 7000, as well as brought in much tougher targets for its existing workforce.

Zuckerberg told his team: "If I had to bet, I'd say that this might be one of the worst downturns that we've seen in recent history."

According to Reuters, Zuckerberg told his staff: "Part of my hope by raising expectations and having more aggressive goals, and just kind of turning up the heat a little bit, is that I think some of you might decide that this place isn't for you, and that self-selection is OK with me."

An internal memo from the company's chief product officer also warned managers that they had to "operate leaner, meaner, better executing teams," and start making do with less than they had before.

Chris Cox said: "I have to underscore that we are in serious times here and the headwinds are fierce. We need to execute flawlessly in an environment of slower growth, where teams should not expect vast influxes of new engineers and budgets."

Meta reported a decline in Facebook users for the first time in its history this year, as Mark Zuckerberg shifts the company towards the 'metaverse', a social Internet combining virtual reality with online spaces.

Late last month, he unveiled a series of new VR headsets which promise to be 'hyper-real' and almost indistinguishable from the real world in future.
