There’s a new way to chat on WhatsApp and you won’t need to reach for your smartphone. It’s been confirmed that Apple fans are being treated to a big new update from the Meta-owned chat platform with the service releasing a calling feature for MacBook laptops and iMac PCs.
This upgrade offers the option to set up voice and video calls right from the desktop app – that’s something that’s not been possible until now. With the new WhatsApp software installed, owners will be able to make group calls from their Mac for the first time.
A bit like Zoom, there’s even the ability to connect with up to 8 people on video calls and up to 32 people on audio calls. That means you have your weekly family group chat without ever leaving WhatsApp.
Along with that new calling function, WhatsApp also says it has added call history plus users can choose to receive incoming call notifications even when the app is closed.
Meta says that the app has also been totally redesigned to be familiar to Mac users, helping them get more done faster when using WhatsApp on a large screen. There’s also the option to share files by easily dragging and dropping into a chat.
As with WhatsApp on any device, WhatsApp for Mac keeps your personal messages and calls private across devices with end-to-end encryption.
Fancy giving it a go? You can try the new app out for yourself – it’s available to download now from WhatsApp.com and coming soon to the App Store.
