If you use an older iPhone model, bad news: you won't receive security updates for your device after September.

iOS 16, which is set to bring lots of new features including lock screen customisation, is only being rolled out for newer iPhones—which means you'll also miss out on security patches.

This means your smartphone might not be protected against new viruses or cyber threats, including ransomware.

Apple has left older iPhones in the dust for a while, with its last security update for devices running iOS 12 being released in June 2021.

Any iPhone older than the iPhone 8 won't be eligible for the new update, which means you could miss out on some vital security updates further down the line.

The models that are supported include:

  • iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus
  • iPhone X, iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR
  • iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, iPhone 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Mini, iPhone 12 Pro, iPhone 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini, iPhone 13 Pro, iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (second gen or later)

Apple does offer a trade-in service for older iPhones which will give you cash or vouchers towards a new device, although it won't be anything close to the steep £729 price tag on a new iPhone 13.

iPhones older than the 8 series are still at risk today as they miss out on regular security patches.

Last week's iOS 15.6 update fixed around 35 major security flaws that can put iPhones at risk from cyber threats. But again, it only does this for newer models.
