‘Most lifelike deepfake’ ever terrifies viewers who ask ‘is Morgan Freeman real’

Can you tell reality from fiction? That's the question 'Morgan Freeman' wants you to ask yourself.

A terrifyingly realistic deepfake clip of the actor has baffled Twitter users, thanks to its photorealistic and lifelike qualities.

The clip shows 'Morgan Freeman' talking directly to the camera and informing viewers that what they see 'is not real' and announcing the era of 'synthetic reality'.

However, the clip isn't of Morgan Freeman at all. He flickers in and out of view, swapping places with a different man using the same facial expressions and speaking in his voice. The video is, in fact, a deepfake.

Deepfakes are computer-generated videos which use artificial intelligence to create a convincing mimicry of real people.

This technology is growing increasingly sophisticated, and has been used to make digital 'clones' of celebrities and politicians say anything their creator wants.

In October, a deepfake challenge asked users to examine a clip of Scarlett Johansson and Elizabeth Olsen to determine who was being deepfaked.
