With more than 6 million CCTV cameras, the UK is still the second most snooped-on nation on Earth, beaten only by China.

That's perhaps why a team of Chinese researchers have created an affordable jacket designed to bamboozle super-smart AI facial recognition algorithms.

SCMP reports that the plain-looking 'InvisDefense' jacket is able to hide the human body from surveillance devices.

It uses a combination of unusual patterns and heat technology to allow cameras to see you—but not recognise you—when AI is in use. What's more, it's a bargain at under £100 per coat.

Professor Wang Zheng, who oversaw the project at Wuhan University, said: "Nowadays, many surveillance devices can detect human bodies. Cameras on the road have pedestrian detection functions and smart cars can identify pedestrians, roads and obstacles.

"Our InvisDefense allows the camera to capture you, but it cannot tell if you are human."

During the day, the coat uses a special camouflage pattern to interfere with the algorithms that recognise people.

And at night, it lets off unusual heat signals to prevent infrared cameras from picking up your body heat.

What's more, the jacket only costs £57, making it an affordable way to maintain your privacy in public areas.

Researchers behind the project reckon that it can reduce the accuracy of detection by 57 percent, and expect that number to go up in future.

It could have some dangerous consequences however, with potential military uses to hide people on the battlefield—or prevent criminals from being caught.
