YouTube users beware: you might have to disable your ad blocker if you want to keep watching videos in future.

That's because the popular video streaming platform is reportedly testing a new feature which will block viewers from watching more than three clips if they have an ad blocker installed.

According to Bleeping Computer, a Reddit user spotted a pop-up window telling ad block users that their 'video player will be blocked after 3 videos'.

The pop-up reportedly says: "It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Video playback will be blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled."

Once this message is received, YouTube users will have the option of disabling their ad blocker for YouTube or paying £11.99 per month for the ad-free YouTube Premium.

YouTube confirmed the report, stating that it is "running a small experiment globally that urges viewers with ad blockers enabled to allow ads on YouTube or try YouTube Premium."

It added that playback could be temporarily disabled in 'extreme cases'.

A spokesperson for YouTube said: "In extreme cases, where viewers continue their use of ad blockers, playback will be temporarily disabled.

"We take disabling playback very seriously, and will only disable playback if viewers ignore repeated requests to allow ads on YouTube."

There are more adverts than ever before and particularly on YouTube, where viewers can expect their videos to be interrupted by short ad clips roughly every 5-8 minutes.

The money generated from these ads is used to pay for the platform, including fees for the creators of videos as well as revenue for Alphabet, its parent company.
