‘Superhuman AI could kill everyone’ and is as dangerous as nukes, MPs warned

'Superhuman AI' could lead to human extinction if governments don't act now, British MPs have been warned.

A parliamentary committee for science and technology heard evidence this week from researchers at Oxford University claiming that AI needs to be regulated in the same way as nuclear weapons.

Michael Cohen, a doctoral student at Oxford, reportedly told MPs: "With superhuman AI, there is a particular risk that is of a different sort of class, which is… it could kill everyone.

"If you imagine training a dog with treats: it will learn to pick actions that lead to it getting treats, but if the dog finds the treat cupboard, it can get the treats itself without doing what we wanted it to."

Meanwhile, Michael Osborne, an Oxford professor of machine learning (a kind of AI), said: "I think the bleak scenario is realistic because AI is attempting to bottle what makes humans special, that has led to humans completely changing the face of the Earth.

"Artificial systems could become as good at outfoxing us geopolitically as they are in the simple environments of game.

"There are some reasons for hope in that we have been pretty good at regulating the use of nuclear weapons. AI is as comparable a danger as nuclear weapons."

Fears about killer AI have become more widespread in recent years, particularly as the potential applications of the technology have become more apparent.

This week, Russia announced plans to send a number of autonomous tanks into Ukraine.

Meanwhile, the rise of ChatGPT technology has made it possible for people to cheat on exams, gain instructions for crime, or even talk to virtual versions of Hitler and Jeffrey Epstein.
