Tesla owners may be about to get one step closer to using their cars as a gaming console, thanks to a forthcoming update.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter this weekend to confirm that his company is working on adding the popular gaming platform Steam to its vehicles.

Musk said on Twitter that "we're making progress with Steam integration" and that Tesla drivers could expect a "demo probably next month."

It would drastically expand the range of games available in Teslas, which currently allow passengers to play a variety of arcade games (including Sonic the Hedgehog) while the vehicle is stationary. Steam offers more than 51,000 games on its marketplace, including some major AAA titles.

If the demo is released as soon as Musk claims, it would mark the culmination of a long-running project at the company to add Steam to its cars.

In February, Musk was asked on Twitter whether the hit game Cyberpunk 2077 would ever be playable in a Tesla.

Musk called it a 'great game' and said: "We're working through the general case of making Steam games work on a Tesla vs specific titles. Former is obviously where we should be long-term."

Thankfully, Tesla drivers aren't able to play videogames behind the wheel while their car is in motion.

In December 2020, a US road safety watchdog banned 'Passenger Play' while the electric vehicles are on the road.

Although this was intended for passengers of a Tesla to play, rather than the driver, there was reportedly nothing stopping drivers from switching on the car's 'Full Self-Driving' (FSD) capabilities and gaming in traffic.

It's unclear whether these rules will change once Steam is available in Tesla vehicles, although it's unlikely given that FSD software still requires a lot of driver supervision and can't drive safely on its own.
