This electric backpack will let you fly like Iron Man

It’s 2022 and flying backpacks are a reality thanks to an Australian company, ‘CopterPack’.

The James Bond-style device features an electric backpack helicopter with a self-levelling autopilot whose latest launch is the second generation of their aircraft.

Footage taken in Sydney shows a pilot able to lift off from a standing position thanks to a pair sets of drone-style blades. They then appear to enjoy a controlled hover using two joysticks.

Founder Matt Lipski says a safety tether was used for this demonstration flight.

CopterPack’s Gen2 electric backpack helicopter with a self-levelling autopilot is currently under development according to Lipski.

‘It utilises an all-new ducted fan control system which was successfully tested,’

‘Also added is an LED lighting system for night flying and a Garmin G5 electronic flight instrument. The purpose of this flight was to test the all-new control system and a safety tether was used,’

The aim for the final design is to attain the following characteristics: long flight times; ultra safe; high speed; and can fly up to 10,000 feet in altitude.

‘The next phase of development involves construction of the final design and the addition of safety features, followed by high speed forward flight testing and high altitude testing,’ said Lipski.

CopterPack say the machine has a lightweight airframe constructed from carbon fibre honeycomb.

‘The unique characteristic of CopterPack is that your body becomes part of the aircraft,’ added the firm.

It’s unclear how much it will cost to own the futuristic gadget but Lipski says it will be known once the development of the final design is complete.
