Vodafone launches fastest UK broadband – will your home get it?

If you are sick and tired of your slow internet speeds then you might be keen to upgrade to Vodafone’s new full fibre service that the company claims will be its fastest home broadband service in the UK when it launches next year.

Vodafone claims you will be able to download an episode of your favourite TV in just 12 seconds – handy for those times the bus is about to turn up and you want that high-quality download on your phone.

These so-called ‘full fibre’ speeds from Vodafone may sound like a breakfast cereal, but they promise to be 60 times faster than ‘standard’ UK broadband, offering 2.2Gbps maximum download speeds – that’s 38% faster than EE’s 1.6Gbps offering that launched on Friday. Those standard speeds are about 35Mbps across the country and would take 15 minutes to download a 4.5GB movie file. At the new top speeds, you’d be able to download the same movie in mere seconds for offline viewing.

The new Vodafone Pro II Broadband service will launch in “early 2024” from £38 per month, not a bad price when the 3.2Gbps speeds – on paper – beat the fastest on offer from EE (1.6Gbps), BT (900Mbps), Virgin Media (1Gbps), and Sky (900Mbps). It still lags behind Community Fibre’s 3Gbps

So what’s the catch? Well, it’s not as easy to get the fastest UK broadband speeds as the big telecom companies’ marketing would have you think. Vodafone says the new speedy internet will be available to “over 13 million homes” – but that’s far from everyone in Britain. Vodafone is tapped into the CityFibre network – you can check if that reaches your home on the CityFibre website.

“We’re the biggest Full Fibre provider in the UK, with the UKs fastest router at unbeatable “ said Max Taylor, Chief Commercial Officer Vodafone UK. “Being able to provide our customers with these phenomenal speeds, showcases the true capability of our Pro II Broadband, customers will be able to get the fastest broadband speeds, in all corners of the home and at an amazing price.”

If you’re lucky enough to be able to sign up to Pro II Broadband, you’ll get Vodafone’s Ultra Hub router and a Wi-Fi 6E booster to get the top speeds. Wi-Fi 6E is a new Wi-Fi standard that allows for faster broadband speeds, but even if your router is set up for it, the devices you use need to also be Wi-Fi 6E compatible, and not many are yet. The new iPhone 15 Pro is, but many older devices won’t be.
