Despite the Internet becoming more mainstream and regulated than it was in the past, there are still many strange online communities out there.

Reddit is undoubtedly home to some of the weirdest, where users come together to form 'subreddit' communities around completely bizarre and unusual topics you might never have even thought existed.

You might wonder how forums dedicated to photos of underwater chairs or heavily modified Furbies ever gained thousands of readers, but once you start diving deep into the weirder corners of these subreddits, you can certainly start to see why.

Here's some of the strangest Reddit communities out there that you can start visiting for your daily dose of weirdness.

'Birds with Arms'

According to the RSPB, there are more than 10,000 species of birds in the world. Birds are fantastic creatures that come in a huge variety of shapes, sizes, and colours.

However, precisely zero of them have arms, which is apparently disappointing for canny bird watchers who wish they had arms.

Founded in 2011, Birds with Arms has been catering to these bird fans for over 11 years. As the name suggests, people come to this subreddit to share photos of birds with human-like arms.

Some of the images are downright terrifying, giving you an uncanny glimpse at what a nightmare world filled with two-armed birds might look like.

'Long Furbies'

First released in 1998, Furbies were one of the most popular kids' toys of the early 2000s. The cute and slightly creepy owl-like hamster creatures could talk and react to users and even record and repeat audio back to you (a feature which got them banned by the US National Security Agency).

In case regular Furbies weren't terrifying enough, one bizarre subreddit community has dedicated itself to making 'Long Furbies'.

Users of the message board use DIY to make their Furbies look extra-long in a dazzling array of weird designs. It's not exactly clear why people do this, but with almost 20,000 subscribers, it's clearly a popular hobby.

'Bread Stapled to Trees'

One of the weirdest subreddits by far is 'Bread Stapled to Trees', where members of the community basically vandalise trees by stapling slices of bread to them and taking photos of them.

The strangest thing about this group is that it has very strict rules. There is a list of 'Acceptable Bread' which can be stapled, including bagels, pancakes, naan bread and toast.

However, would-be bread staplers are instructed not to staple more than three pieces of bread to one tree, and they're also not allowed to share photographs of cacti, young trees, or bonsai trees.

The mods of the subreddit even tell users: "Post bread stapled to trees! Impress your friends! Confuse your enemies! Win valuable Reddit karma!".

'Chairs Underwater'

Ever wanted to sit at the bottom of a swimming pool? Now you can, thanks to Chairs Underwater.

This subreddit encourages people to post photos of chairs placed underwater. Some users like to share group photos of them and their friends sitting on the chairs, but some photos are of nothing more than a sunken chair.

Chairs Underwater is definitely one of the most dangerous weird subreddit hobbies, and for safety's sake, it's probably not a good idea to try and sit on a chair underwater at all.
