From UFOs to Stonehenge, there are thousands of unsolved mysteries in this world.
But thanks to modern technology, one mystery can be easily solved—that of the green and orange dots at the top of an iPhone.
These mysterious dots have confused iPhone users ever since they were first introduced with iOS 14.

These may look like an annoying addition to the top of an otherwise minimalist phone screen, but the orange and green dot indicators are actually there to help you. They do this by letting you know when different apps are using your webcam and microphone functions.
What the orange dot on iPhone means : If you see the orange dot it means an app is using your microphone, whether it's a voice memo, Siri, a phone call, or WhatsApp.
What the green dot on iPhone means : the green dot suggests an app is your camera or even your camera and microphone at the same time. You'll see it most commonly when you're on FaceTime or if you're filming a video with sound.
If you aren't deliberately using any apps that require the microphone or camera, it could be because something else is accessing these features without your knowledge.

Luckily, the iPhone has a built-in feature to let you know exactly which apps are using the camera or microphone.
When the dots appear, all you need to do is swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen.
This will open up the iPhone Control Center, and the name of the app will appear to inform you that it used these features recently.
This should give you the ability to identify any errant apps which are trying to snoop on you so you can delete them—and keep your phone use private.
