Apple’s iPhone 15 is almost here and there’s one major change that many long time Apple fans might have noticed.
Yes that’s the introduction of USB-C on its newest devices after a ruling by the European Union. The new rules require all phones sold after autumn 2024 to use the USB-C connector for their charging ports.
Apple announced earlier this year it would be putting USB-C on its phones to comply with the newest rules.

What is USB-C and how is it different to Lightning chargers?
USB-C, or Universal Serial Bus C, was released in 2014 and has many similarities to the Lightning charger that was see on iPhones.
It has a rounded and rectangular connection with it becoming industry standard for many electronic devices such as smartphones, controllers, keyboards and more.
Surprisingly, there are a few similarities between USB-C and Lightning chargers. Both offer fast charging speeds thanks to Apple’s optimisation of Lightning with iPhones and other devices. They are both also very small but pack a punch when it comes to extra-speedy charging but that’s where the similarities end.
The main differences between the two are the charging and data speed transfers. Lightning cables allow for a data transfer speed of 460mbps compared to USB-C’s 640mbps. In terms of charging, Lightning cables offer up to 20W of output compared to USB-C’s 240W of output but that depends on the device.
Why has the iPhone charging dock changed in 2023?
The main reason behind the change is so Apple can comply with new EU regulations. The new law- which was introduced in 2021 – requires phone manufacturers to adopt a common charging connection by December 2024 to save consumers money and cut waste.
The regulation covers devices such as mobile phones, tablets, e-readers, mice and keyboards, GPS (global positioning system) devices, headphones, headsets and earphones and many more.
Apple originally said that the law “stifled” and “harmed innovation” but soon confirmed this year that it would comply with the regulations.
Apple’s head of marketing, Greg Joswiak, said in 2022 in response to the new law: “Obviously we’ll have to comply, we have no choice” but then he argued that it “would have been better environmentally and better for our customers to not have a government be that prescriptive”.
Now Apple has brought USB-C to the iPhone 15 series and it seems like it’s here to stay.
