Facebook is introducing an option for users to have up to five profiles under a single account.

On Thursday, Facebook’s parent company Meta announced the product change that would ‘help people tailor their experience based on interests and relationships’ like posting different types of content aimed at family versus friends.

The move signals a major shift from the ‘real name’ requirement that the company has maintained since its inception.

Each user can still have only one Facebook account with a main profile that continues to use the person’s real name. People will be able to access any additional profiles they create after logging in to that account.

The change could be a gateway into users being able to semi-anonymise their identity on the world’s biggest social network.

This new change is in line with options offered by competitors like TikTok and Twitter, as well as Instagram, also owned by Meta.

In its statement, Meta said its rules against impersonation and other types of misleading representations of identity would continue to apply to all profiles.

A Meta spokesperson said the company was testing the new approach in certain countries, but declined to specify which ones.

Last year, Facebook saw a rebrand to Meta, with a new focus on creating products for its virtual reality offering.

This month the company had announced that it would begin rolling out ‘Meta accounts’ so people could log into their VR headsets without a Facebook account. The feature is scheduled for August 2022.
