Thousands of drivers will be able to have full conversations with their cars, thanks to a new AI tool.
That's because Mercedes-Benz is installing ChatGPT on its in-car computers, starting in the US.
Currently, certain Mercedes drivers can say 'Hey Mercedes' if they want to use voice commands in their cars and do things like turn the air-con on.

But the new ChatGPT feature will make the in-car assistant even smarter, meaning you can ask it a huge range of questions just like you would on a computer.
That means you could ask your car for activity suggestions on the way to the beach, or ask it to tell your kids a story to keep them entertained.
900,000 Mercedes drivers in the US will be the first to get access to the feature. All they have to do to sign up is tell their car, 'Hey Mercedes, I want to join the beta programme'.
The car will then begin to install the necessary updates to make the AI tool work effectively.

Mercedes says it will also look at adding extra chatbot features to its digital assistant. This could make your car capable of booking you a table at a restaurant or some cinema tickets while you're on the go.
This would use third-party ChatGPT presets with specialised features, such as being able to write emails.
ChatGPT is a natural language AI chatbot which has boomed in popularity in recent months. People are using it to generate an infinite variety of text, from writing essays to offering counselling.
