Your expensive Sonos speakers could look massively inferior tomorrow

Sonos fans might want to pop tomorrow’s date in their diary with the US audio brand confirming that it will be launching a “new era of sound” on March 7, 2023. That tease, which has been pushed out to users via an email, seems to confirm what many already knew – the new speakers will be getting a refreshed design and all-name called Era.

That change was revealed last month by technology website The Verge with a huge leak revealing a swathe of details about these upcoming devices and even pictures showing how they will look.

According to the report, the launch will include two speakers called the Era 100 and Era 300. It’s currently unclear if these will replace any of the current ranges or if Sonos is simply creating more choice for consumers but it’s possible the launch could spell the end for the hugely popular Sonos One.

Full details will be unleashed tomorrow, but if The Verge has everything correct then we can expect to see a big boost to the sound credentials of these music makers thanks to the addition of technology such as Dolby Atmos, stereo sound and spatial audio which makes the music appear to magically hit your ears from all directions.

It’s also thought that the Era range will get the option to beam audio to the devices via Bluetooth which means you can use them just like a standard speaker rather than just via Wi-Fi. Some portable speakers, such as the Sonos Roam, already feature Bluetooth but owners of gadgets like the Sonos One haven’t been able to use this popular connection before.

Other extras appear to include faster Wi-Fi 6 internet speeds for stutter-free streaming plus there could be the option to plug other accessories, such as record players, into the speakers via USB-C.

Just like other Sonos speakers, it’s likely that the Era 100 and Era 300 will get support for Alexa although it’s unclear if Google Assistant will be included in the range.

Early reports indicated that the Era 100 will cost around $250 (£210) with the Era 300 getting a more expensive $450 (£380) price tag. As we mentioned earlier, along with full details there have also been numerous pictures posted online which show how these speakers will look.

The Era 100 appears very similar to the Sonos One with a small boxed-shaped case and mesh front grille. Meanwhile, the Era 300 features a more radical appearance which dips in the middle. The Verge says that all of the Era models will feature a design that’s easier to fix which should mean they last a lot longer.

Everything you need to know about these devices will be revealed tomorrow so watch this space if you are thinking about treating yourself to a new Sonos speaker.
