Samsung usually launches its new top of the line Galaxy S Android smartphones at the end of January or very beginning of February, but a new report claims the tech giant is bringing the launch date for the Galaxy S24 series forward.
According to Korean site The Elec, the Galaxy S24 series will be unveiled in San Jose, California at a Samsung Unpacked event on 17 January 2024, with sales to begin shortly after. The report says “a Samsung Electronics official” confirmed the time and place, a return to Samsung launching its smartphones in the US after the Galaxy Z Flip 5 and Galaxy Z Fold 5 were showcased first in Seoul, Korea, in August 2023.
“San Jose is where the headquarters of companies such as Google and Apple are located, “ the report said. “Samsung Electronics is said to have considered San Francisco and Seoul, Korea … It is believed that Samsung Electronics chose San Jose as the debut location for the S24 series in consideration of cooperation with Google and competition with Apple.”
Bringing the announcement forward by two weeks or so to the usual annual time is not unusual, but shows Samsung wants to make a splash as soon as possible in the new year. It is expected the company will release a Galaxy S24, Galaxy S24 Plus, and Galaxy S24 Ultra, to try and compete directly with the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro series – the iPhone overtook Android in terms of US market share for the first time ever in 2023, possibly why Samsung is opting to return to the US to launch the S24.

Leaks about the S24 series show the upcoming phones to look relatively similar to the S23, with three or four circular cameras on the back, a fairly plain matt glass finish, rounded corners on the S24 and S24 Plus, and a boxier rectangular look to the S24 Ultra with that handy S Pen stylus included and stored inside the body of the phone.

The Galaxy S23 phones all used the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipsets, a move that delighted Samsung fans – but the S24 and S24 Plus will reportedly use Samsung’s Exynos chipsets in the UK and other regions. The S24 Ultra appears set to use the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 worldwide, and a souped-up version of the chip especially for Samsung at that.
