It might not feel like it, but this year marks 15 years since the launch of the first iPhone.
Packed full of old-hat hardware, Apple's first smartphone looks positively ancient stacked next to some of the advanced models the tech giant has released since.
However, just because the first iPhone is old by today's standards doesn't mean it's worthless. In fact, the first-gen iPhone is becoming increasingly rare. If you have one sitting around in the attic, you could potentially make thousands of pounds selling it on eBay to eagle-eyed collectors.

In the right condition, original iPhones now sell for up to £18,000 online.
One listing for an 8GB Apple iPhone on eBay is currently priced at £16,456.00. That might sound like a lot of money, but in this case, the iPhone is completely unactivated in the box and apparently still in full working condition.
According to the seller, it's worth so much because many unopened 1st Gen iPhones are no longer working because a battery which has never been charged degrades over time to the point where it no longer works.
However, original iPhones which still work can fetch tens of thousands of pounds. In this case, the sellers claim to have carefully unboxed the iPhone and given it a full charge every 3/4 years. They also bought it on the first day that the iPhone was released and kept it in its original packaging.

Other 1st Gen iPhones which don't work can still fetch a few hundred or even a few thousand pounds if they're in the original packaging, but unless you've charged yours every few years, it's unlikely that the device will still work.
Since the launch of the first iPhone, Apple has released more than 34 models. These days, they boast an impressive technical spec, speed, storage space and cameras that were unimaginable in 2007.
Next month, it's likely that Apple will launch the latest iteration of its smartphone range, the iPhone 14.
