The royal family knows exactly how to dress for any occasion. They always look put together in their perfectly tailored pieces and basically create trends every time they step out the door. However, when it comes to their red carpet appearances, their style somehow gets kicked up another notch.
From Meghan Markle looking like true royalty (page 6) to Kate Middleton’s red carpet outfit that sparked controversy (page 7), here’s a look back at some of the royal family’s major red carpet moments.

In February 1997, the late Princess Diana looked stunning on the red carpet. She was attending the premiere for the film In Love and War, and she undoubtedly had all eyes on her. In a navy blue dress paired with a clutch in the same hue, she looked perfect for the event.
Plus, the movie was screened in aid of the British Red Cross, making the event right up her alley.

Over the years, Kate Middleton has perfected her red carpet style. She looked like a true celebrity while attending the 2017 EE British Academy Film Awards. The BAFTAs are the British version of the Oscars, according to People. So you better believe stars such as Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, and Amy Adams were in attendance, too.
Middleton’s black floral dress was designed by Alexander McQueen, and it was styled gorgeously with her chignon hairstyle and chandelier-style earrings. Prince William was looking perfect for the event, as well, in a perfectly tailored tuxedo.

Why yes, that is Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla Parker Bowles, chatting it up with actor Daniel Craig on the red carpet. Their meeting wasn’t coincidental, however. The royals were actually attending the 2012 premiere for Skyfall at Royal Albert Hall, in which Craig stars playing James Bond.
Bowles looked gorgeous in a velvet blue gown, while Charles was looking quite dapper in his suit. Craig wasn’t looking so bad himself, either.

10 years before Prince Charles and Camilla Parker Bowles attended the Skyfall premiere, Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip walked the red carpet at another James Bond event. In 2002, the royal couple arrived at the Die Another Day premiere at Royal Albert Hall in London.
The event called for an official statement issued by the press secretary to the queen. Part of the statement read, “Her Majesty has been Patron of the Cinema and Television Benevolent Fund for 50 years, and receipts from ticket sales for the performance will benefit the CTBF.”

It’s not every day that you see some royals hanging out with a Star Wars character. While attending the premiere of Star Wars: The Last Jedi in 2017, Prince Harry and Prince William took a pit stop on the red carpet to take a look at BB-8.
The princes actually had cameos as stormtroopers in the film, so they were particularly special guests at the event. By this point, they’ve definitely gotten their red carpet style down, looking dapper as ever in their tuxes.

The new Duchess of Sussex was already looking like royalty back in 2014. Meghan Markle stunned in this gorgeous mermaid gown while walking the red carpet.
On top of appearing to fit right in with the royal family, she’s been contributing to causes she cares about for years. This look is from the Elton John AIDS Foundation’s 13th Annual An Enduring Vision Benefit, so she was looking good while making a difference.

Middleton brought her high fashion back to the BAFTAs in 2018. She stunned in a green Jenny Packham gown while pregnant with her third child, Prince Louis, and even paired the look with brightly colored jewels and a perfect smokey eye.
As stunning as Middleton looked, however, her choice of green sparked some controversy. Most guests wore black in solidarity with the #MeToo and Time’s Up campaign against sexual harassment, leaving some disappointment.
However, as Australian news website news.com.au noted, “British royals avoid making overtly political statements or gestures.” It could explain why the Duchess of Cambridge opted not to participate in the movement.

The royal family was at it again while attending yet another James Bond film. Prince Harry, Prince William, and Kate Middleton were all the center of attention on the red carpet for the 2015 premiere of Spectre.
Middleton looked like she was channeling Grace Kelly in her pale blue dress with a sheer top. Elle called her look “the epitome of old Hollywood glamour in Jenny Packham” — and we couldn’t agree more.

We’re loving the princesses’ fun and colorful styles for the event. Plus, they got to meet the movie’s star, Leonardo DiCaprio, so it was definitely a night to remember for these royals.

Elizabeth and her husband, Prince Philip, attended the premiere as the guests of honor. According to the BBC, star of the film Liam Neeson said to the press, “I’m told the Queen doesn’t see many movies.” He added, “But they’re coming tonight and that’s pretty special.”
