Friday’s Good Morning Britain kicked off on ITV with Alex Beresford and Kate Garraway in the presenting chairs for the first time since Piers Morgan’s abrupt exit. Since leaving earlier this month, GMB has enlisted the likes of Ben Shephard, Ranvir Singh and Adil Ray to step into Piers’ shoes, although show bosses are still no closer to announcing a permanent replacement.

However, following his stint on the final GMB of the week, Alex has now emerged as one of the frontrunners to take over for good.

Thanks to his on-screen chemistry with Kate and presenting style, bookmakers quickly found themselves slashing his odds to take over permanently.

With bookmakers Coral, Alex’s odds of landing the host’s role plummeted from 8/1 to 2/1 after his stint in the hot seat.

“Alex Beresford stepped into the presenter role this morning on GMB and on the back of that his odds have been slashed to get the gig on a permanent basis,” Coral’s John Hill said.

He added: “GMB are clearly taking their time to announce Piers Morgan’s replacement and after he got his chance to shine today, Beresford must now be among the shortlist.”

With his odds of taking on the part facing such a dramatic overhaul, it certainly looks like Alex is well and truly in the running.

And the bookies’ presumptions come just days after ITV confirmed Ben Shephard wouldn’t be Piers’ permanent replacement – for the time being anyway.

It was reported last week in the Mail on Sunday that ITV bosses had secured Ben as a regular host of GMB.

A source told the publication: “ITV and GMB bosses were totally unprepared for Piers going… Nobody had a back-up plan.

“Ben, who is adored by the staff and much of the audience, stepped in and the thought is now that he will work long term.”

However, ITV refuted the claims, insisting that while Ben remained a part of the “GMB family”, no decision has been made.

Ben is still a frontrunner with other bookies, however, as ITV continues to weigh up its options for Piers’ replacement.

With Ladbrokes, Ben’s odds currently stand at odds on, with 4/5 placed on him.

After stepping in earlier this week, Adil is also still being tipped as a possible replacement at 5/2.

And GMB star Ranvir is priced at 5/1 to join Susanna Reid on a permanent basis.

If Alex were to take over from Piers, it’d be a decision which would undoubtedly divide GMB viewers everywhere.

Piers’ GMB exit came on the same day he found himself embroiled in a heated argument with Alex over his comments on Meghan Markle.

So much so, Piers even stormed off the programme on his final day.

And following his appearance on Friday, some viewers even threatened to “switch off” after seeing Alex in the presenter role.

Good Morning Britain continues weekdays at 6am on ITV.
