EastEnders detective DCI Keeble (Alison Newman) has become a staple of the soap – no matter the gap left between stints, the actress has revealed that she is always welcomed back by the team ‘as a member of the family who has been on holiday.’
Right now, she is in the midst of an ongoing saga with Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden).
Seeking revenge for the murder of her father during a robbery gone wrong in 1979, Keeble, who was only 10 at the time she lost her dad, is forcing Phil to ensure Billy (Perry Fenwick) goes down for the crime.
‘Flattered’ for her character to be given a backstory, Alison told Metro.co.uk when we caught up with her: ‘The story has just evolved and developed, and it’s brilliant.
‘Playing a supporting role in a show like EastEnders and to be given a backstory is really flattering, everyone has been lovely about it.’
Alison told us, without hesitation, that she would continue to do stints with EastEnders if asked, and if available.
And part of that is due to the team she gets to work with.
‘As someone who has been popping in and out for 16 years, it’s an amazing place to come back to, it has a lot of heritage and history,’ the actress and director enthused.
‘I am always treated like an old member of the family who has been on holiday when I come back, it’s so lovely.
‘There’s a real buzz about the place at the moment, I think everyone knows that the show is in good hands and it’s a really exciting time to be there.’
This has a feeling that has been constant across the 16 years she has been appearing on and off in the programme.
Bad Girls and Footballer’s Wives star Alison has many fond memories; and she recalled one which stood out in particular, in which she played alongside one of TV’s most legendary ever stars.
‘I have so many moments I remember over the years, such as the first time I worked with June Brown,’ she told us.
‘It was gobsmacking. We had a rehearsal for a scene and Keeble was being really mean to her about Bradley. And I thought, “yeah she’s really good”.
‘Then the cameraman shouted action, and her response to me pretty much threw me backwards in my chair and I realised, “ah that was you just rehearsing, oh my God you are REALLY good”.
‘She was so kind and generous. That’s my experience on EastEnders, people are always welcoming, it’s such a nice place to go to work.’
Alison, co-creator of the acclaimed series Harlots, is very much at the centre of the action as EastEnders kicks off into an explosive action.
And she promised us that it’s not going to wind down at any point soon.
‘It’s tricky not to give any spoilers! It’s a great story that has a lot of twists and turns, there’s a lot to come! It’s going to be quite the ride!’
Alison speaks about her memories of the camp Bad Girls death she was gifted, her favourite aspect of DCI Keeble and explains why she doesn’t view her as a villain in a full chat here.
