It’s officially fall and we are speeding towards the Emmy Awards, when the best of TV (both the traditional variety and streaming series) will be honored with fancy gold trophies and a fancy red carpet event. Want to make sure you actually watch the show when it happens, instead of just reading tweets about it the next morning (even if it’s just because watching the show live will make the next morning tweet-reading a much richer experience)? Here’s a quick, handy guide to everything you need to know about when to watch the 2022 Emmys live.
When are the 2022 Emmys airing on TV?
The Emmys are going to air on NBC on Monday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET.
When are the 2022 Emmys available to stream?
Good news: If you’ve cut the cord (or never had a cord to cut because it’s 2022 and paying for an old school cable package hasn’t been a thing for lots of people for a while now), you can still watch the 2022 Emmys live. In addition to airing on NBC, the show will also stream live on Peacock on Monday, September 12 at 8 p.m. ET.
Why are the 2022 Emmys on a Monday?
If you’re a bit thrown by the fact that the Emmys are on a Monday night this year, instead of a Sunday (which is the night of the week when most major award shows traditionally air), the short answer is “because sports.”
The longer answer, as Gold Derby very helpfully explains, has to do with the rotating nature of the Emmy Awards broadcast rights and the NFL schedule. Basically, the Emmys rotate among the four major broadcast networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and FOX) and this year happens to be NBC’s turn to air the show. But, since NBC already has NFL games built into its Sunday night schedule, the Emmy Awards have to shift to Monday (NBC did the same thing last time it aired the Emmys in 2018).
