McAvoy spoke to Screenrant about his return to the series, as he was supposed to have a standalone episode in season two.

He said: “Season two, I was so excited. It didn’t happen. Season three, I was just desperate to get going, and then as quickly as it started, it felt like it finished. So, it was brilliant.

“I could do with it being more, but one of the brilliant things about him, or one of the things that makes him so interesting, and such an asshole father, is his absence.

“The absent nature of his parenting defines him, so you can’t really argue with that. You can’t put him in too much.

“But I was really excited just to get going being that guy, and inhabit that weird megalomaniac and child killer every day.”

Meanwhile, Will actor Amir Wilson said he would miss the crew after the series has ended.

He said: “We’ve been lucky enough to work with the best of the best, all sorts across all boards.

“In doing that, I’ve found myself learning so much about what goes on behind the camera, and I found myself interested in what goes on behind the camera, and not just in front.

“I find myself wanting to do more behind the camera, and it’s great when you’re able to take away something like that from a job. It’s a blessing.”

His Dark Materials airs on HBO and BBC One.
