The end of Avengers: Infinity War changes everything for the MCU, but some fans are still a little bit confused by the big twists following the major showdown with Thanos.
But what did the ending mean for Avengers 4? After all, the team said they didn’t want to tell fans the name of the next movie as it would give away major spoilers.
If you go on ahead, we’re warning you there are big spoilers. ALL. THE. SPOILERS. So if you don’t want to know how Avengers ended then look away.
Right, you’ve stuck with us.
The ending crammed a lot in, so there’s a lot to unpack here. In summary, Thanos wins the war and manages to get all six Infinity Stones.
He snaps his fingers and wipes out half the universe – including some of our favourite heroes (see below for who). Thanos skips off to enjoy a sunset, still in possession of the stones and the Gauntlet, even though it’s damaged.
Here’s what we’re going to look at:
- Dr Strange’s actions and the Time Stone
- Did Vision die?
- Thanos’ final words and the Soul Stone
- What Avengers are dead?
- Who could come back?
- What movies are next?
- The post-credit scene
Why did Dr Strange do what he did?
Thanos is fighting Iron Man, Doctor Strange, Spider-Man and half of the Guardians of the Galaxy on his home turf, Titan.
He’s attempting to get the Time Stone back. At the same time his henchmen and outriders are attacking Wakanda to get the Mind Stone from Vision.
The plan was to separate Thanos from the Infinity Gauntlet but that doesn’t work out thanks to Peter Quill who is grieving and furious that Gamora was sacrificed so they could get the Soul Stone.
It all kicks off on Titan and Thanos easily beats the heroes – he’s about to land the fatal blow on Iron Man when Dr Strange steps in and offers the Time Stone to Thanos…but only if he spares Tony Stark.
It seems like a daft switch to make, especially since Strange had told Tony his priority was the stone.
Step back a bit though, and we get some answers. Doctor Strange looks ahead and sees “all the possible outcomes” of their battle. Strange admits out of the 14,000,506 ways he saw them fight Thanos, there’s only one where they win.
We never know what he actually sees, but we can assume that Tony needs to be alive or Strange wouldn’t have stepped in. When he says “it’s the only way” this is it – giving the stones to Thanos.
Did Vision die?
So Thanos has the Time Stone. His next plan is to head to Wakanda and claim the final stone.
Scarlet Witch is ahead of him though, and Wanda separates the Mind Stone from Vision and destroys it before Thanos has even got to the city.
Thanos has the Time Stone though…so he turns back time, Cher style, and takes the Mind Stone from Vision before Wanda can complete her plan. Thanos now has all the six stones.
Vision dies in the scenario, but we don’t actually know what happened with separating his consciousness from the stone – after all Wanda was interrupted. She grabbed the holographic file, so it isn’t beyond the realm of possibility that Vision could come back.
While this is all going on, Thor does try and kill Thanos with his axe, but he aims for his heart rather than head, seemingly being unaware of how to kill the villain. Too late. Thanos snaps his fingers and wipes out half of the population. Done.
Thanos’ final words
Thanos is now in an empty orange realm – is he inside the Soul Stone?
In the comics, there’s a pocket dimension called the Soul World, a place where souls stolen by the gem are stored.
He sees Gamora as a child, and she questions him, asking him what his campaign has cost.
His answer: “Everything” could be taken to mean the people he’s just wiped out, but it’s more to do with Gamora. He loved her most, but had to kill her to get the stone he needed.
The last we see of Thanos is him chilling on a green planet, watching the sun set.
Good for him.
Note: He still has the Infinity Gauntlet , but it’s charred as if it’s broken.
What Avengers are dead?
Earlier in the movie we see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) die, Heimdall (Idris Elba) is also gone before the dusting. The Collector (Benicio del Toro), Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Vision (Paul Bettany) are probably now dead, as in actually dead for good. Though we’re holding out hope for Gamora.
Then we get to the final battle and the dusting.
The shocking part is it’s not just one person that dies, quite a few of our heroes are wiped out.
While we don’t see Shuri and Wong, they don’t actually disintegrate on screen so we can assume they survived for now.
Spider-Man (Tom Holland), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman), all the Guardians apart from Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Nebula (Karen Gillan), Bucky (Sebastian Stan), Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch), Falcon (Samuel Wilson), and Wanda (Elizabeth Olsen). Drax (Dave Bautista), Mantis (Pim Klementieff)… all disappear into dust too.
Those left standing include: Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), Captain America (Chris Evans), Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), War Machine (Don Cheadle), Okoye (Danai Gurira), and M’Baku (Wilson Duke).
It’s pretty bleak for our heroes.
The war is over, but Thanos has won. BUT, hold up.
Does Spider-Man die?
If you think about this logically, they can’t be ‘dead’, or at least they can’t all be dead.
Spider-Man has a movie coming out in July 2019 (after the Avengers 4 movie). He can’t be dead. Black Panther disappeared into dust – but he just smashed the box office, Marvel would be insane to lose that.
We won’t know what will happen until May 3, 2019 when the next movie is released, but you can make your own guesses as to who actually died and who actually survived.
Who could come back?
Marvel hasn’t got the trumpet out and made a lot of noise about the potential sequels, which means there aren’t a lot of spoilers here.
Apart from Spider-Man: Homecoming 2, we don’t really know what’s coming up. Spider-Man is also technically Sony.
Black Panther made more than a billion dollars worldwide, you don’t just say bye to that.
If we’re thinking logically, it makes sense to see this as a part one of a story – Avengers 4 being the part two. It would be logical to assume that the next movie will focus on how the remaining team save those who disappeared into dust.
Vision could be resurrected, since we don’t know how far Wanda got, and Gamora has her connection to Thanos.
What movies are next?
In between Infinity War and Avengers 4 we have Ant-Man and the Wasp and Captain Marvel, both of which are unaffected as they take place before Infinity War.
That post-credit scene
Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) sends out a beacon to Captain Marvel when he sees the dusting. In the scene, Nick Fury and Maria Hill hear what’s happened and began to put together a plan.
A car crashes in front of their vehicle, so they leave their car and see a helicopter fall out of the sky.
Maria starts to turn to dust, Nick realises what’s happeneing. He pulls out a device, and then turns to dust too.
The pager device falls to the floor, but we see the message "sending" and an emblem. The emblem is Captain Marvel’s symbol – the hero of the upcoming movie.
The movie is set in the 90s though, so it’s probably more of a hint as to how she would fit into Avengers 4 after we see her origin story in the March movie.
