Antiques Roadshow: Guests stunned over valuation

One couple were left in shock when given an eye-watering valuation for their family heirlooms during a classic episode of Antiques Roadshow – but they refused to sell them.

The items included a set of Chinese Jade lovebird, a kidney-shaped item, and a bracelet.

The combined total of the stunning items amounted to £60,000 but the guests revealed they had no intention of selling them.

Speaking about the items, expert Lars Tharp said: “Now this is slightly different, the colour scheme here, this black brown band.

“This was very, very popular. A kind of jade very popular in the Ming Dynasty. I cannot guarantee this is Ming Dynasty.

“It’s very difficult to date Jade because, after all, all you have to do is find a piece of this very popular Jade and then carve it to make it look like that.”

“But having said that, if you look at the detail of the very flat carving here, these are all very archaic scholarly motifs,” the expert explained.

The guest tried on the bracelet but said that due to it being uncomfortable, she only wears it when she’s at home.

After inspecting all of the items, Lars left both the guests and the audience behind them in shick when he revealed the true valuation of the heirlooms.

He stated: “I think the pebble bird sits so beautifully it is is probably between £5,000 and £8,000. The bang is probably about the same.”

At this point, the audience let out a huge gasp as Lars valuated the the final piece to be between £20,000 and £40,000.

However, the couple said they weren’t planning on selling anything and instead decided to keep the items.

They said: “What? Wow. It is our favourite so it’s not for sale. Thank you very much. My dad will be very pleased.”
