Charlie Stayt told his BBC Breakfast co-star Nina Warhurst they "don't need to go there" when they were discussing life expectancy and death.

The morning presenters were looking at the daily newspapers, with one headline offering "five sleep tips for a longer life" – though Nina wasn't sure it applied to them due to their early starts.

She said: "If you can fulfil these habits, life expectancy is 4.7 years longer for men and 2.4 for… Oh, he's writing down the numbers, 2.4 years for women."

Charlie told her that he was "waiting for the tips", but soon made it clear he wanted to change the topic of conversation.

Nina went on to say that the article told readers to have between seven and eight hours of sleep a night, that they should have not had any trouble falling asleep more than twice a week, feel well-rested for more than five days a week, and not take any medication to help them sleep.

She announced: "I do not tick any of those boxes so my life expectancy is about the next three years."

Nina had to clarify that she was talking about medication to sleep rather than general medication.

She then quizzed Charlie on how many of the boxes he ticked, with him confessing that he actually abided by all those sleep rules.

Nina was left seriously impressed as she told him: "You're going to live a lot longer than I would Charlie."
