BBC newsreader mortified as amused viewers point out ‘Donald Tramp’ blunder

Donald Trump mug shot released after visit to Atlanta jail

BBC News presenter Rajini Vaidyanathan was forced to correct herself on Thursday morning’s programme when she accidentally called former US President Donald Trump, “Donald Tramp” while getting her words mixed up.

Speaking on BBC News, the reporter was telling viewers about the alarming moment US Senator Mitch McConnell froze during a recent press conference in America.

She told BBC viewers: “Now there are health concerns about the top Republican Senator Mitch McConnell.

“He froze while answering a reporter’s question during a press conference in Kentucky.”

The BBC aired a clip of the moment in which the Senator froze following a probe about running for re-election in 2026.

Someone joined him at his podium and asked if he heard the question, but he stood in front of the press in silence, looking confused.

A spokesperson for Mr McConnell said he felt “momentarily light-headed” and would consult a doctor.

It comes after a similar incident occurred in Washington in July with the same Senator freezing for about 40 seconds before his colleagues stepped in to help.

Rajini explained: “Now for background, Mr McConnell is 81 and has served as a Senator in Washington for 39 years.

The news anchor then made an error, saying: “The average age of the US Senator is 64. By way of comparison, President Joe Biden is 80 years old and Donald Tramp… Donald Trump, pardon me, is 77.”

The “tramp” blip didn’t go unnoticed by some BBC News viewers, with Jonna Foss Tweeting: “Oops, a bit of a slip up there #BBCNews.”

Kaine Pearce penned: “She said Donald tramp. Then corrected herself. Look.”

Another amused user shared the moment on the social media site and wrote: “Donald Tramp”. LOL.” (sic)

Kevin Coy commented: “Heard on the Radio One Breakfast Show: “Hi Greg,” says someone on text, “On BBC World News, that presenter just called Donald Trump, Donald Tramp…”

Mr Trump was the US President between January 20, 2017 and January 20, 2021.
