Presenters introduced at BBC Sports Personality of the Year
BBC viewers admitted they “switched off” minutes into this year’s Sports Personality of the Year. Tuesday’s award show saw hosts Gabby Logan, Alex Scott, Gary Lineker and Clare Balding fronting the celebratory evening.
However, fans took to X in their droves to complain that the awards were being aired on a weekday rather than its usual weekend slot. Others complained about the presenters and stopped watching.
@ellidong penned: “Just turned over for the beginning… Alex Jones and Clare Balding… TV off! #spoty.” (sic)
@Bytor14wrote: “Used to love #SPOTY Highlight of run up to Christmas. Pretty pointless now BBC show very little of the sports mentioned and the programme is not what it used to be. Off out so won’t be bothering to watch.”
“#spoty tonight. Tues? Used to be a must watch national event. Not any more. Presenters for one reason. Gary freakin Lineker, Alex Scott, Jill Scott. Nope. Won’t be watching. Even the 6 candidates are a bit desperate. One I haven’t even heard of,” (sic) @AndrewJMullen fumed.

@lukemcewen asked: “Why is #SPOTY on a Tuesday?”
@Christian_Dyer commented: “#SPOTY used to be prime time Sunday night telly. Now it’s on a random Tuesday night which shows how much the award has lost its prestige. Real shame.”
@therichgoodwin shared: “Can’t watch this #SPOTY woke c**p……!! It used to be a good show.”

@digitalsunshine added: “Just started watching #SPOTY and then out of nowhere it dawned on me that it’s a pile of toss and I don’t really give a damn who wins.
“Quite a liberating realisation, which has just saved me a couple of hours of my life.”
Not all agreed though, with @tiffany_kay writing: “3 female presenters on #spoty” along with celebratory emojis.
The post concluded: “And Gary Lineker (love you too!).”
Gary welcomed fans to the glitzy show as he explained: “Thank you for joining us for a very special evening.
“There’s excitement in the air as we get to relive the best of sport in 2023.”
“Tonight we will remember champions of the past, celebrate heroes of the present and meet stars of the future,” Alex announced.
Clare added: “And we have the honour of bringing you a landmark show.
“First broadcast in 1954, this is the 70th BBC Sports Personality of the Year.”
Sports Personality of the Year is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
