Ben Mitchell (Max Bowden) did what he believes to be ‘the right thing’ in EastEnders, as he set husband Callum Highway (Tony Clay) free, telling him that this is as far as they go as a couple.
‘We’re out of chances’, he told his beloved other half in emotional scenes, just hours after the truth about his own rape ordeal was revealed. ‘I’m sorry. It’s over’.
Cue the tears.
Ben, as viewers know, was raped by Lewis earlier this year. He struggled to come to terms with what happened to him, and subsequently spiralled out of control as he started to take drugs.
Callum, meanwhile, believed that he had cheated on him, and thus he put an end to their relationship.
Following a near-death experience, Ben promised to stop taking drugs, while Phil (Steve McFadden) resolved to let his son deal with his ordeal, promising to be there to support him no matter what he decides.
Sam (Kim Medcalf), however, had Lewis kidnapped, and a showdown in a warehouse ensued earlier this week, as Phil threatened to take the rapist’s life.
Ben had the final call on the matter, and ultimately let Lewis live, with subsequent scenes seeing the mechanic resolve to report his ordeal to the police.
Thursday’s (August 18) edition of the BBC One soap saw him follow through on this, as he headed to the police station.
Callum, however, spotted his husband entering a room which, according to the officer, is usually reserved for sexual assault cases, and thus he proceeded to ask questions.
Ben struggled to open up, but Callum was insistent, pleading with his former partner to tell him what happened. Ben started to discuss his ordeal, and as Callum pieced together the rest, he took his soulmate’s head in his hands and promised to support him.
Ben reported the crime to another officer, and afterwards, he and Callum spent some time together in the Square, as they discussed the last few months.
Callum made it quite clear that he wanted to reunite.
Ben, however, was determined to prove that he was nothing like Lewis – who’d said some hurtful things to him about him being ‘bad’ – and thus he told Callum that it was over, adding that the cop is ‘such a good guy’ and thus deserves better.
Is this truly the end of the road for Ben and Callum?
