Since the period drama first made its debut on Netflix back in 2020, viewers have been hooked on keeping up with the Bridgerton family. With the show commissioned for a further two series, fans have been eagerly waiting for the third season to drop.

Last year, viewers were thrown back into the glitz and glamour of the 1800s Regency period as they followed the rocky relationship of Anthony, Viscount Bridgerton (Jonathan Bailey) and Miss Kate Sharma (Simone Ashley).

However, the third series of the Netflix show is set to focus on Penelope Featherington’s (Nicola Coughlan) love for her best friend’s brother Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton).

After being discovered by Eloise (Claudia Jessie) as the anonymous gossip Lady Whistledown, it looks like Penelope has a lot to answer for in the next instalment.

Although, it may be a while until viewers get to see the drama unfold as it’s been reported filming for series three has come to a halt.

The delay comes following reports that executive producer Shonda Rhimes wasn’t happy with the direction the storyline was going.

A source told The Mail Online: ‘We have been told that it needs the fun back so there are changes, which of course means delays.

“One thing is for sure though, the production team want to get it right for Bridgerton fans so they enjoy it as much as they have in the past.

“There are some elements that Shonda is just not happy with so wants to change them. Some of it got very dark.’

Express.co.uk have contacted Netflix for comment.

Speaking about the upcoming series, actress Adjoa Andoh, who plays Lady Danbury in the show, teased that there’s drama ahead.

At the Pride of Britain Awards, the 59-year-old told Metro that along with some lovely dresses viewers are used to seeing, people will get to find out what Colin’s romantic outworkings are.

Speaking about her own character in the next instalment, she said: “I will have some trouble that comes at me in surprising ways, and it’ll be more of the same, but with surprises.

“It’s got extra glam to it this season, I would say.”

The actress also added that series three will be slightly different in terms of storytelling that fans are used to which she commented was new and refreshing.

Although there may be a bit of a wait for the new series of Bridgerton, viewers will be able to get their royal regency fix in the prequel Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story.

Set to be released on the streaming service on May 4, 2023, the spin-off will follow the story of a young lady played by Arsema Thomas.

An overview of the series reads: “Under the thumb of a much older husband, Agatha uses Charlotte’s arrival to find her own way into society.

“With keen knowledge of the once-divided social scene and the intricacies of marriage, Agatha becomes a guiding light for the new Queen.

“All while finding her own voice and power we’ll soon recognize as Bridgerton’s iconic Lady Danbury.”

Series one and two of Bridgerton are available to watch on Netflix.
