ITV have announced the British Soap Awards has been cancelled for 2024.

Despite its mass success over the years, bosses have made the decision not bring back the annual awards ceremony next year. The broadcaster have not given an explanation as to why it will not take place, however, the popular show is expected to return in 2025.

An ITV spokesman said: "The British Soap Awards won't be on air in 2024 but is set to return in 2025. The show was fantastically received in 2023, achieving consolidated figures of 2.9 million and doubling its audience year on year, so we look forward to the show's return."

The star-studded awards show first kicked off in 1999 and celebrates the best of British Soaps, featuring EastEnders, Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Hollyoaks and Doctors. The show was thrown into chaos back in June after Phillip Schofield stepped down from hosting duties.

Taking over from the 61-year-old was super soap fan and former Loose Women star Jane McDonald, who branded the job a "dream come true". Ahead of the awards, the 60-year-old wrote on Instagram: "Everyone knows how much I LOVE my soaps, this year I’ve been honoured to be mentioned in Corrie, EastEnders and Emmerdale so this is just a dream come true."

The singer added: "I can't wait to see all our wonderful soap nominees and celebrate all their hard work with them – roll on the awards, I can't wait!" She was such a hit with fans that many begged for her role to be made permanent.

Jane was announced as Phil's replacement after he was dropped from ITV following news of his affair with a male colleague. The former This Morning presenter confessed to having an "unwise but not illegal" relationship with a man while he was still married to wife Stephanie Lowe.

Coronation Street triumphed the awards this year, with the ITV soap walking away from the glitzy ceremony with a whopping six gongs on June 3. They won the award for Best Single Episode, Scene of the Year, Best Dramatic Performance, Best Comedy Performer, Best Newcomer and Best Family.

EastEnders won four awards, including the coveted best soap. Lily Slater actress Lilia Turner took home the gong for Best Young Performer while her co-star Aaron Thiara, who plays Ravi Gulati, won Villain of the Year. The soap awards should return in 2025, however, one soap that won't be making a comeback with it is Doctors following news of its cancellation after 23 years.
