Carry On stars hit out at ‘immoral’ bosses in explosive new documentary

A new explosive documentary is set to expose the darker side of the iconic Carry On franchise.

The long-running films have brought laughter to British homes for more than 60 years and are among the most beloved of any movie series.

With their cheeky puns and saucy gags, they made stars out of actors such as Kenneth Williams, Sid James and of course Dame Barbara Windsor.

But a new docu-series, Carry On – Secrets and Scandals, is set to air on Channel 5 and will lift the lid on the darker side of the bawdy comedy films.

According to The Mirror, the new documentary will feature an unseen 1998 interview with the late Barbara who claimed the cast never saw a penny from the repeats of the films.

Barbara, who sadly passed away in 2020 aged 83, was interviewed for a 40th anniversary.

However, the interview from 1998 was never shown – until now.

According to the publication, the EastEnders star said: “It’s immoral what they did. They should pay us for those compilations. I don’t care about the films, showing them in their entirety on telly.”

“There’s a lot of actors who didn’t earn a lot of money who could do with those few pennies, and Peter Rogers, I mean he doesn’t need it, for God’s sake.”

Babs continued: “Where does the money go? It’s wrong. We put a few quid together to go to a lawyer. He said we didn’t stand a chance.”

Peter Rogers produced the hit franchise and was notorious for being frugal and not paying his stars as expected.

The Mirror reports how at a 40th anniversary dinner, he joked: “Most important of all, of course, are the artists. I love them very much and would do anything for them except pay them more money.”

Another Carry On star Amanda Barrie also makes an appearance in the bombshell documentary.

She vented her frustration at the bosses, claiming the cast were “humiliated” while filming raunchy scenes.

The Coronation Street also alleged they risked their lives while on set and struggled to get on with co-star Kenneth Williams.

While playing Cleopatra in 1964’s Carry On Cleo, Amanda said a crew member had to rescue her after she got into a scalding hot bath.

What’s more, before filming the scenes, Amanda was forced to visit a hormone specialist to boost her “assets.”

While Benidorm star Sherrie Hewson revealed how she nearly froze when she was forced to stand in the snow wearing just a bikini.

The 72-year-old, who was filming Carry On Behind at the time recalled how it was her “baptism of fire.”

“It wasn’t funny,” she added.

Carry On – Secrets and Scandals is on Channel 5 on Saturday (February 18) at 8.40pm.
