Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins star Ferne McCann has revealed she went into the Channel 4 show with the same mindset as giving birth to her daughter Sunday, four.

Former TOWIE star Ferne, 32, is one of 14 celebrities faced with a brutal selection course run by the elite team of ex-special forces operators – Chief Instructor, Rudy Reyes and his team of Directing Staff (DS), Foxy (Jason Fox), Billy (Mark Billingham) and Remi Adeleke.

Speaking ahead of the new series, which is the longest yet and airs on Sunday 4 September at 9pm, Ferne has discussed why she decided to sign up as well as her preparations for the show.

Talking about joining, Ferne said: "It's a show that I've watched ever since the beginning. And it's always been one of those shows that I always thought I’d like to do but when it came round for me to actually say yes, when I had the conversations and I had an interview and all of that, it just felt like the right time in my life to be tested.

"I do really welcome a challenge. I get that itch every few years where I'm like, 'Right, okay. What can I do now to step outside of my comfort zone?'

"I had no expectations, but a lot of expectations at the same time, I knew it was going to be really tough, but I think until you're in that environment, nothing can quite prepare you for how ridiculously tough it actually is."

Talking about whether she had "anything to prove", the reality star admitted: "I really wanted to prove to myself to be honest. I kind of went into Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins with exactly the same mindset as when I was leading up to giving birth to my daughter, which sounds ridiculous.

"But honestly, when you're in that environment and it's really challenging, you have to draw from experiences that you've been through to find the resilience and the strength to get you through.

"Everyone talks about labour, but you don't really realise how painful it actually is, but I really wanted to feel that pain, which may sound strange.

"And it was the same with this, I really wanted to see how tough it actually is. And I want to prove to myself that I can do it, but whilst I was in there, I did a lot of proving myself to the DS. I think they questioned every day why I was there!"

Talking about how she found the Directing Staff, Ferne said: "It's almost like the ultimate therapy session in a really messed up way, because the DS bring things to the surface and to the conscious state from the subconscious.

"When I was a teenager my parents divorced. Even though I'm very close to my dad, I didn't have a male figure in my life throughout my whole puberty and teenage years.

"So I found it really strange having men really shout at me. I felt like I was a little girl. Everything that I really pride myself on, being a mother and being an entrepreneur, running multiple businesses, all the strengths that I feel that I have in day to day life, I felt really inadequate, I felt like a child. And it was really hard and I didn't like it. I didn't like it. I'm someone who needs praise!"

She added: "It very much cast me back to when I was at school and you're getting told off and you're trying to hold it in so desperately, the bottom lip quivers and you're like, 'I don't want to cry.'

"But yeah, I cried. I cried with meaning and reason as well. Every morning I woke up and I was like, 'It's my time to go. I don't want to do another day.'"

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins returns to Channel 4 on Sunday 4 September at 9pm.
