Channel 4 viewers have slammed the new courtroom drama Vardy v Rooney after its first episode on Wednesday. The new series is a blow-by-blow account on the case nicknamed the ‘Wagatha Christie’ trial which saw Rebekah Vardy and Coleen Rooney face-off in a libel battle. Despite the show starring highly acclaimed actor Michael Sheen, some viewers switched off minutes into the first episode.
The eagerly anticipated dramatisation saw the Welshman star as Coleen’s well-known barrister David Sherborne.
However, its opening scenes led to a mixed reaction on social media.
Hayleyjaney1 tweeted: “So sooo embarrassing.”
Blogging Blabber added: “@Channel4 #VardyvRooney ffs how banal. Mind numbingly dull. Poorly constructed, poor acting. Michael Sheen MUST be embarrassed by this production.”

Nial wrote: “I can’t watch this ! It’s so brain dead.”
Dan Holling fumed: “Lasted 14 mins. Absolutely s***e #VardyvRooney.”
Although many viewers seemed to switch off during the opening moments of the re-enactment, some were addicted to the story.
Colleen Brigid remarked: “I’m still watching it but so trashy #VardyvRooney.”
Trendy Face agreed and joked: “This is so bad but I can’t turn it off.”
The high-profile dramatisation sees Natalia Tena take on the role of the accused TV personality.
She has also starred in Game of Thrones, Harry Potter and the iconic Christmas movie About A Boy.
Coleen Rooney is played by Chanel Cresswell, who has won a BAFTA for her amazing performance in This is England ’90.
The scenes in the show centre around the courtroom battle which saw Vardy defend herself after being accused of leaking stories to the press about her former friend.
The former Loose Women panelist, who is married to Leicester City footballer Jamie Vardy, was forced to pay £1.5 million in damages.
Following the result of the trial, she appeared in an interview on Talk TV in which she explained her pain at the outcome.
Speaking in August this year, she told Kate McCann: “I will say that until I’m blue in the face. I did not do it. I feel let down by a lot of people, a lot of things.
“But most importantly I feel let down by the legal system.”
After coining the now infamous phrase “It’s… Rebekah Vardy’s account” in 2019, Rooney released a statement following the victory.
She wrote: “Naturally, I am pleased that the judge has found in my favour with her judgment today. It was not a case I ever sought or wanted.
“I never believed it should have gone to court at such expense in times of hardship for so many people when the money could have been far better spent helping others,” she added.
“Although I bear Mrs Vardy no ill-will, today’s judgment makes clear that I was right in what I said in my posts of October 2019.”
