While Charity (Emma Atkins) had a lot of reservations about being pregnant again, recent Emmerdale episodes saw her begin to get excited by the idea. She was encouraged by Mackenzie (Lawrence Robb)’s response to being told about the pregnancy, as he revealed just how keen he was to have a family with Charity.
Sadly the couple are about to be given some terrible news after Charity collapses in pain. Hospital tests reveal that she has an ectopic pregnancy, where the foetus develops outside the womb. Sadly the baby has absolutely no chance of survival.
In the aftermath of this, Charity copes with the loss in typical Charity fashion, by squaring her shoulders, taking a deep breath and insisting that life will carry on as normal.
Mack does his best to support her, feeling that it’s his role to be the strong one, but he’s hurt by Charity’s unwillingness to talk about what has happened.
Lawrence Robb talked to Metro.co.uk about Mack’s feelings at this time. ‘At the end of the day, we’re all people that have our fair share of demons and issues, but most importantly our own way of dealing with the said issues,’ he said. ‘Both the characters deal with the trauma in different ways. They both deal with it very differently, and in many cases not in the way you would expect.’
Crucially, their different responses threaten to push them apart, as Lawrence explains. ‘He wants to talk about it and she doesn’t. So there may be resentment there, but I think it’s more confusion and hurt that she doesn’t seem to want to talk about it.’
As Charity puts up a wall around her feelings, is she doing herself more harm in the process?
