CHARLIE Stayt left BBC Breakfast viewers stunned today after swearing live on air during a 'car crash' interview.

The 61-year-old journalist was speaking to the newly appointed Home Secretary James Cleverly via video link about the Government's controversial Rwanda scheme for asylum seekers.

Yesterday, the policy was ruled as unlawful by the Supreme Court, and Charlie questioned Mr Cleverly about the plans and verdict.

He said: "OK as you're aware, some things attract more attention maybe than they deserve."

But Charlie then shocked BBC Breakfast viewers as he continued: "But yesterday in the Commons, you were accused of describing the Rwanda system as bats***. Is that true? Did you say those words?"

The MP hesitated before replying: "Well, that was a claim made of me, not something that I said, but the point is…"

Charlie interrupted: "So you didn't say that.."

Mr Cleverly tried to explain what he had meant and that the scheme was "already having a deterrent effect."

But Charlie responded by repeating his question and adding: "I am happy to give you the time to answer the question I just asked you, did you say that word?"

The MP replied: "I certainly don't remember saying anything like that."

BBC Breakfast viewers were shocked that Charlie was able to use the swear word live on air and took to X – formerly Twitter – to comment.

One wrote: "Had to rewind to double-check that Charlie Stayt just said "Bats***" on breakfast TV #BBCBreakfast."

Another added: "Charlie Stayt wheeling out the word "bats***" uncensored at 7.42am is wild."

A third tweeted: "#JamesCleverly your interview on #BBCBreakfast is a complete car crash."

Meanwhile a fourth shared: "We go now to #BBCBreakfast where the brilliant Charlie Stayt is turning the air blue with his potty mouth."
