Coronation Street fans blast disgusting Roy Cropper plot as a disgrace

Coronation Street: Ray Crosby confronts Roy Cropper

Coronation Street fans fumed a storyline involving Roy Cropper (played by David Neilson) on Monday was “disgusting”.

Kind-hearted Roy knew there was more to the story when troubled youngster Lauren Bolton (Cait Fitton) burst into the cafe after her shift to explain she needed her paycheck as she was quitting.

It came after a rejection from her ex, Max Turner (Paddy Bever) which left Lauren feeling alone and embarrassed.

The teenager decided she needed to flee Weatherfield and Roy sussed she was planning to sleep rough, so cooked her a meal and offered her a room to sleep in.

Untrusting Lauren made him a sexual offer in return, leaving some viewers of the ITV soap repulsed by the misunderstanding.

Many quickly took to social media to slam the plotline, with Twitter user @MickJohnPNEFC fuming: “Corrie writers are a disgrace with that Roy & Lauren thing, get a grip…. #Corrie.” (sic)

@TwellyWatcher shared: “Roy is a soap LEGEND! And this is how they treat him – by having a teenage girl hit on him and do this!? Baffled! #Corrie.”

@NickSmethurst75 added: “#corrie This evening’s storyline with Roy and Lauren is scraping the bottom of the barrel, give it a rest script writers and bring back the humour please.”

However, other viewers thought the scene was powerful and important.

@MaryLuvsLaughin tweeted: “These scenes with Lauren & Roy. His sensitivity. Great acting from both characters Brilliantly written scenes. #Corrie.”

“Watching #Corrie and I’m absolutely heartbroken by the interaction between Roy and Lauren. I completely understand the situation with Lauren and I hate that she has grown up believing that any man who does something nice for her wants something in return,” @arcarver87 posted.

@itzzzo_ pointed out: “As ‘disgusting’ as it might’ve been between Roy and Lauren it’s quite clear for whatever reason she thinks that when men show kindness to her it means they are after something. #Corrie.”

@laceyturners echoed this, adding: “Lauren’s storyline is a prime example that child abuse, exploitation and grooming affects them later on in life but it is dismissed as them being weird #corrie.”

The scene saw Lauren reacting strangely to Roy’s kindness.

“You don’t want anything in return?” She asked, before Roy replied: “Well, I would ask you to reconsider your decision to resign.”

“What else?” The youngster asked, to which Roy stated: “Ensuring your wellbeing is payment enough.”

“And what about your wellbeing?” Lauren asked, adding: “You’re lonely, aren’t you? What I mean is if you’ve got needs I don’t mind helping.”

Roy was horrified and corrected Lauren, who was mortified by her misjudgement and fled before Roy could offer her any help.

Coronation Street continues on Wednesday at 8pm on ITV.
