Coronation Street fans left upset as show favourite makes shock exit

Coronation Street fans were left in shock after soap favourite Elaine Jones unexpectedly bid farewell to Weatherfield on Monday.

Played by Paula Wilcox, the character finally saw through killer Stephen's evil tendencies, opting to end their relationship for her own good.

Elaine then decided to turn her back on the cobbles, seeking solace in a new start in Scarborough to create some distance from her ex, portrayed by Todd Boyce.

With son Tim (Joe Duttine) and daughter-in-law Sally (Sally Dynevor) seeing her off, Elaine embarked on a new journey as she hopped into a taxi.

However, fans are not convinced that this is the last time viewers will see Elaine, with one person saying: "So Elaine is leaving the street and heading to Scarborough, I think it'll only be temporary."

Others were concerned for her family, with one saying: "If Elaine's going to Scarborough, then I would be worried about Tim."

A third agreed, saying, "Elaine left and didn't tell the others about Stephen. Now Tim and Sally will be on his hit list."

Elsewhere on the show, Paul Foreman made a heartbreaking decision about his battle with Motor Neurone Disease, as revealed he wants to end his own life.

In his moment of need, Paul turned to his boyfriend Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank) to ask him for assistance in ending his suffering when the time came.

But the vicar was taken aback, stating that he could never help put his beloved partner 'down like a dog.'

He also argued that this decision would never align with his beliefs and Christian faith, so after a tense conversation, Paul came to terms with Billy's stance on the matter.

Billy later revealed that he thought the conversation would go in a different direction, saying: "I thought you were going to propose when you said you wanted to talk to me."

Paul seized the idea, declaring, "It's a good idea. I can't get down on one knee, but we should."

Yet, he also appeared somewhat hesitant about the idea of a wedding, leading to speculation that he might be using it as a means to eventually get what he wants.

Fans of the show have been quick to point out the similarities between the heartbreaking scenes and the assisted suicide storyline that followed Hayley's emotional pleas to Roy back in 2014.

Played by Julie Hesmondhalgh, the beloved character Hayley had expressed her wish to die after being diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. She later took her life, passing away in her husband Roy's arms.

One viewer said: "Hayley Cropper was helped to die, so it's not the first time they've gone there."

While another commented: "Did we not have this storyline with Roy and Hayley? Just because Paul has MND does not mean there has to be an assisted dying storyline."

A third expressed their opinion, saying: "Hasn't Corrie done this storyline with Paul and Billy before with Hayley and Roy?"
