Coronation Street icon announces return to ITV show after three-year break

Coronation Street star Cherylee Houston is finally returning to the Cobbles in her role as Izzy Armstrong after taking a three-year break during the global pandemic.

The 48-year-old actress was diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos, a rare connective tissue disorder, at the age of just 23.

Because of this, the fan-favourite was forced to endure an extended period of shielding from Covid-19 in order to protect her health.

The soap star – who took on the ITV role of Izzy Armstrong back in 2010 – last appeared on the street in 2020 before lockdown restrictions were put in place.

Since then, she has made an appearance via Zoom in 2021 for a storyline that tackled the difficulties people with disabilities faced during the pandemic.

In the scenes filmed at her home, Cherylee was joined by her real-life husband Toby Hadoke who played the role of her neighbour and carer, Fergus.

When she returned to work, the actress couldn’t help but gush over her “really supportive” employers at Coronation Street who helped her transition back into the role smoothly.

Speaking to The Mirror, she explained: “We did do some scenes from home, we talked about the possibility of that or me going back to a gentle start to ease me back in. They’ve just been really supportive.”

Izzy is set to return to the silver screen once again next week, and it’s clear to see she is excited to be returning to the Cobbles.

She added: “It would be wonderful to come back with a bit of a bang. Although I might actually come back with a small fizzle while I get better!”

It comes after fans shared their fears that the show could be set to lose another beloved character after one actor hinted at her exit in a cryptic post.

Cait Fitton joined the ITV show late last year as Max Turner’s girlfriend Lauren Bolton – daughter to Reece, one of Griff’s racist thugs.

The star took to her Instagram after Wednesday night’s episode with a rather cryptic post as she shared a snap of herself in a puffer coat outside the Rovers Return for a black and white monochrome snap.

Eerily reminiscent of the snap she used to announce her arrival onto the show, Cait also dropped a rather mysterious caption, writing: “Was a dream… still is a dream.”
