Coronation Street rocked by death of beloved character

Corrie’s Bill Webster punches Curly Watts over Maureen

On Monday’s episode of Coronation Street, ITV viewers learned soap legend Bill Webster (played by Peter Armitage) had died following a health scare earlier this year. During the instalment, many Weatherfield residents touched on his death as Bill’s son Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) stayed by his side.

Earlier this year, ITV fans saw Kevin rush to Germany to help his father after he suffered a heart attack.

Weatherfield residents then received confirmation on Monday evening Bill had died.

During a conversation with Kevin’s wife Abi (Sally Carman-Duttine) and his sister Debbie (Sue Devaney), the pair spoke about Bill’s sudden death.

Abi told her sister-in-law Kevin described his dad’s passing as “peaceful” with Debbie angry at herself for leaving.

Debbie commented: “I suppose it’s how I’d like to go. Horizontal and full to the brim with morphine.

“I’m going to go out and help with the arrangements and stuff. I should’ve stayed out there.”

Abi tried her best to reassure her replying: “You weren’t to know, and at least you got to see him.”

Despite Kevin not appearing in the episode, ITV viewers learnt from his wife he was doing well despite his dad’s death.

Peter Armitage, the actor who played Bill, had a series of stints in the soap from the 1980s through to the 2010s.

The last time fans saw him on-screen was back in 2011 when he suffered a heart attack.

Sadly, Peter died in real life at the age of 78 in 2018 from a heart attack with ITV paying tribute to the star at the time.

The broadcaster said: “Peter was a much respected and much-loved member of the Coronation Street family. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time.”

Peter was also known for his roles in The Befrienders, Couples, Jack the Ripper and the sitcom Lucky Feller alongside David Jason.

It’s not yet been confirmed whether or not soap fans will see an on-screen funeral for Bill Webster.

Although there is another death expected on the cobbles this week with killer Stephen Reid (Todd Boyce) expecting to strike again.

The murderer has already gotten away with killing Leo Thompkins (Joe Frost) and his dad Teddy (Grant Burgin) and it looks as though his sights are set on someone else.

In upcoming scenes, viewers will see Rufus Donahue (Steve Meo) continue to blackmail the businessman in a bid to keep his mouth shut over him spiking Carla Connor (Alison King).

When Michael Bailey (Ryan Russell) unknowingly got in the way of Stephen’s scheme, Rufus managed to haggle 25 percent of the profits made from the Nippersnapper deal with the Americans.

Scenes set to air this week show Rufus offering Michael a job after demanding Stephen up his payments to 50 percent instead of 25.

As Michael accepts, furious that Stephen seems to constantly overlook him, he’s left shocked to discover Rufus has been found dead in a swimming pool.

Coronation Street airs on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at 8pm on ITV1 and ITVX
