Coronation Street’s Daisy suffers horror acid attack by stalker on wedding day

Coronation Street’s stalker storyline will escalate into a horror Katie Piper-inspired acid attack.

Pictures show the nightmare moment the soap’s terrorised barmaid Daisy Midgeley is targeted on her wedding day by her stalker Justin Rutherford – hell-bent on disfiguring her as she stands in a wedding gown.

Soap bosses teamed up with The Katie Piper Foundation and Acid Survivors Trust International to tell the story so they could “highlight the devastating impact and long-lasting effects of such heinous attacks”.

Charlotte Jordan, 27, who plays Daisy, said: “When I was first told about this storyline, I really didn’t see this coming. It’s not something you see a lot on television so I was really surprised.

“There is a fear lurking in the back of Daisy’s mind since Justin was released on bail. She has always been thinking, ‘Will Justin retaliate in some way?’

“Seeing him again after he has been warned multiple times by officials to stay away from her, she is certainly scared of how he is going to react. I don’t think Daisy really thought about how obsessed Justin was going to become.”

Mum-of-two Katie Piper was 24 when she was attacked with acid by an accomplice of her ex-boyfriend, causing major damage to her face and blindness in one eye before she underwent pioneering surgery to restore her face and vision.

Corrie’s acid attack scene comes after weeks of tension building over Daisy’s stalking nightmare.

She has been hounded by Justin, played by Andrew Still, 29, since he became fixated on her after one chance meeting at hospital during her cancer scare.

He started by sending Daisy flowers and chocolates and bombarding her with texts as well as cyberstalking her, and turning up at a wedding fair she was attending.

Bosses have promised the plot would get more horrifying, and the scene in which Justin hurls acid at Daisy as she gets set to become Daniel Osbourne’s bride will air next Monday (March 27).

Corrie producer Iain MacLeod said: “We were keen to show the long-term reality for people who are subjected to this kind of attack.

“It is something we might often read about in the papers but perhaps don’t fully understand, in terms of the depth and variety of effects it can have.

“As well as the medical impacts, we explore the social fallout of having your appearance profoundly changed, both in terms of your own ability to process that and how the wider world reacts to you.

“The story will at times be heartbreaking but we felt it was an important one to tell.”

In 2021, there were 420 reported acid attacks in the UK, but numbers are feared to be far higher.

The figure far exceeds the number of reported attacks in other countries blighted by acid attacks including India, Mexico, Colombia.

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday on ITV1 and ITVX
